After a tough start the day before we were hoping for a more relaxed day at the bike. Well, it did not turned out the way we hoped for. It started with a flat even before we started the day. After that we had a nice start, except for the strong head wind. After just 20 km we had our first stop, this time we weren’t going to skip breakfast. We found a cozy place just by the sea and had some pancakes and a bagel, not the best nutrition for a long day on the bike but still better than the day before.
After the nice stop we kept a steady pace. The legs were still a little bit sore from the day before but the feeling was way better. We knew it was going to be a long day, especially because of the heat and the strong head wind. After another two hours we had to stop to refuel, and what better way than with some beer. The thermometer on the Garmin showed 52 °C in the sun, a huge contrast from the Swedish winter we left behind us just a couple of days ago.
We kept going for another couple of hours. The 7 mile bridge was a tough one. A lot of traffic and strong head wind made it a bit stressful. To make it easier we took turn on who was in front, one kilometer each.
Time flies when your pace is slow due to the wind. We were hoping to catch the sunset in Key West so decided to skip a lunch break and just made a quick stop to have some ice cream. Once again a bad decision, taking in consideration that we didn’t had a big breakfast. With just 20 km to go we had yet another flat.
Unfortunately that made us miss the sunset by the square in Key West by a couple of minutes. But at that point we were just happy to be there. Fatigued and completely exhausted we finally found a place to eat. I don’t know if it was the heat, the wind or the bags on the bike, probably a combination of all those factors, but these were one of the toughest 150 km I have ever done.
