The route

It’s now less than a week before our trip to Florida. There has been some planning and some stuff to fix before the trip. We started by looking into where to sleep. To avoid biking around just to find a place to spend the night we booked all of our stays in advance. This is also convenience if you want to keep your budget down, since you can compare prices online before you book. The downside is that you have to plan your trip and distance for each day which makes the trip less flexible. But we decided that it was still the best way for us.

When it came to the bikes we looked at two alternatives, rental bikes or to bring our own bikes. We decided to go with the second alternative. If you already own a bike case it’s a little bit cheaper but also it’s more time efficient. Another benefit is that you don’t risk to end up with an uncomfortable bike that you’ll have to ride for a whole week.

So, the route that we have planned looks like this:

Day 1. Ft Lauderdale – Miami, 42 km. We’ll arrive in the afternoon and we will have to assemble and pack the bikes right there at the airport. All luggage will be stored in the airport storage. Then it’s time to find our way to the Airbnb place in Miami.

Day 2. Miami – Tavernier, 125 km.

Day 3. Travernier – Key West, 146 km.

Day 4. Rest day, which probably means mojitos by the beach.

Day 5. Key West – Key Largo, 157 km. This is the longest distance during the trip.

Day 6. Key Largo – Miami, 122 km. Celebrate the arrival with some mojitos.

Day 9. Miami – Ft Lauderdale, 40 km. Back to the airport and prepare for our flight back home.
